Discover Belle‑île
14 kilometres from Pointe de Quiberon, the largest of the Breton islands will leave its mark on you. As soon as you arrive by boat at the charming Port de Palais, don’t hesitate to hire a bike or a car to discover every detail of Belle-île. The visit starts with a walk on the quays with their colourful houses. Stroll around the port and the streets in the old town of Palais before setting off to explore the Vauban citadel. You will enter via the gateway of the keep. It’s an impressive building. Take the parapet walk. The view of the port is delightful.
Sarah Bernhardt’s home
Head north-west, to Sauzon. This picturesque port is an essential place to visit. Go in the evening. The quay becomes lively with café terraces and delicious restaurants. From there, Pointe des Poulains is just three kilometres. This wild cape was made famous by the actress Sarah Bernhardt, who settled there at the end of the 19th century. You can visit the property, which has been open to the public since 2007.
Did you know
Have you heard of the goose barnacle?
This odd-looking crustacean, for which fishing is regulated, is only found in certain regions on the Atlantic coast… including Belle-Ile. It’s a delightful appetizer, and also a character in an app to explore the island in a fun way.
An island with two faces
Jagged cliffs, raging sea… You’ll love the thrilling landscape of the wild coastline. The most beautiful views include: the grand lighthouse, the rocks of Grotte de l’Apothicairerie, the panorama of Port-Coton or Port-Goulphar. These landscapes contrast with the calm and sublime Bordadoué beach, or Grands-Sables beach, ideal for families. The best time to go is out of season.
