Guirec Soudée

A Breton odyssey
   Yvinec

In mid-Vendée Globe, modern-day Ulysses Guirec Soudée commands respect by the daring, spirit and freedom he embodies. An exchange against the current – invigorating!

Each departure is a rupture.
And yet the call of the sea is always stronger.

A native of the little island of Yvinec off the coast of Plougrescant, it’s as if seawater flows through Guirec’s veins. He was only 7 years old when he first set out to sea in his boat and learnt another language, the language of the open sea. Currents, wind direction: a whole world to master, but one in which he soon felt more at ease than in the classroom.

In order to achieve his dreams, off he went to Australia! An inaugural encounter with the elsewhere. His goal? To learn English and earn enough to buy his first boat. Difficult months, during which making-do was the order of the day.

Back home again, he kept the promise he’d made himself and treated himself to the vessel that was to accompany him on his first major outing on the open sea. It was a small boat, almost unsailable. But so what? Guirec set off, without too much confidence. It was also his first night alone at sea. He’ll remember it all his life.

Another indelible memory is his meeting with Monique… His one true love, his “beautiful redhead” as he likes to call her. When he stopped over on the Canary Islands, she set sail with him across the Atlantic – the first challenge the young sailor had set himself, determined to experience his freedom to the full. 28 days cut off from the world, without contact or influence. A way of confronting himself, of asking the questions that mattered.

A personal challenge… but not one he always faces alone! His expeditions see him collaborating with scientists, carrying equipment for measuring the seabed – even if it means disrupting his logistics. Guirec offers the fruits of his discoveries to everyone, the youngest amongst us in particular, via publication of didactic works and, most recently, through creation of an educational area. His former boat is on exhibition there along with the rowboat (the one that accompanied him on his two Atlantic crossings!). Raise the general public’s awareness of nature via his stories and career, always with a positive, entertaining and resolutely enthusiastic message: that’s exactly what Guirec wants to do.

“Yvinec made me. More broadly, Brittany made me what I am today. When I’m far away, I think of its rocks. Nothing on earth would make me leave this land.”

A land of wondrous landscapes and products alike! Guirec admits to having a major weakness for Plougrescant oysters, whose taste and texture are incomparable as far as he’s concerned.

Even though Yvinec is far and away the place on earth where he feels best, he also loves La Ferme de Boiséon, in Penvenan, for its canteen-guinguette ambience, not forgetting Only Bears and Auberge Ti-Coz in Quimper, where the dishes are so many invitations to set sail.

There’s no doubt about it, one of Guirec’s greatest joys is being at sea. But life in the land of his birth, with his family, is good too… He’d also like to set sail with his loved ones in a few years, so that they in their turn can marvel at everything he’s already been lucky enough to discover.
