Each departure is a rupture.
And yet the call of the sea is always stronger.
A native of the little island of Yvinec off the coast of Plougrescant, it’s as if seawater flows through Guirec’s veins. He was only 7 years old when he first set out to sea in his boat and learnt another language, the language of the open sea. Currents, wind direction: a whole world to master, but one in which he soon felt more at ease than in the classroom.
In order to achieve his dreams, off he went to Australia! An inaugural encounter with the elsewhere. His goal? To learn English and earn enough to buy his first boat. Difficult months, during which making-do was the order of the day.
Back home again, he kept the promise he’d made himself and treated himself to the vessel that was to accompany him on his first major outing on the open sea. It was a small boat, almost unsailable. But so what? Guirec set off, without too much confidence. It was also his first night alone at sea. He’ll remember it all his life.
Another indelible memory is his meeting with Monique… His one true love, his “beautiful redhead” as he likes to call her. When he stopped over on the Canary Islands, she set sail with him across the Atlantic – the first challenge the young sailor had set himself, determined to experience his freedom to the full. 28 days cut off from the world, without contact or influence. A way of confronting himself, of asking the questions that mattered.
