The Monts d’ArréeA mountain-range in the heart of Finistère

Ride, walk or cycle through the Monts d’Arrée range

Mountains in Brittany? You wouldn’t think so, would you? But the Monts d’Arrée have everything you want from the mountains: varied vegetation, impressive views, plenty of ascents and descents, unspoiled natural surroundings, beautifully changing light and an atmosphere of mystery.

Landscapes that seem almost unreal

The Monts d’Arrée are a haven for nature-lovers. Rising from the largest area of heathland in Brittany (8,000 hectares), heather, gorse, peat bogs and rocky ridges stretch out as far as the eye can see. It’s even more lovely in summer when the colours seem to explode! Within the Armorica Regional Natural Park, this unspoilt, carefully conserved landscape offers impressive views over the surrounding countryside. Climb to the summit of Mont Saint-Michel de Brasparts. From the chapel there’s a panoramic view of Lake Brennilis. The region has a thousand other surprises, such as the Huelgoat boulder field. According to legend, the giant Gargantua, furious about the reception he’d had from the forest inhabitants, threw these rocks he found on his way! Also take a look at the parish enclosures, groups of religious buildings that are typical of the region.

The biggest height differences in Brittany

You’ll find over 250 km of signposted trails, with routes of varying difficulty. If you’re a really keen walker, have a go at the GR380, which makes a 220 km circuit of the mountain range. There’s a wide range of themed walks to choose from. In the same day you could take in some art and crafts studios, discover Breton legends and go panning for gold in a river. This is also a playground for mountain bikers. The trails offer some big climbs and descents, the highest points rising to 385 metres: Tuchenn Gador (Botmeur) and Roc’h Ruz (Plounéour-Ménez). Technical descents, steep climbs, wooded valleys and sharp ridges… There’s everything you need for a great ride while protecting this fragile natural environment. And why not take part in that famous mountain bike event, ‘Roc’h des Monts d’Arrée’? The region’s also ideal for exploring on horseback.
