In Saint-Guénolé, in the Pays Bigouden area, you’ll find the ‘Compagnie Bretonne du Poisson’ (Breton Fish Company), a canning factory run by the same family for three generations.

Tuna, mackerel, sardines, and monkfish are all brought in fresh from the port, cooked and made into ‘sardines à l’ancienne’ (traditional sardines), ‘rillettes de la mer’ (sea-food rillettes), mackerel fillets in sauce, tuna with wakame seaweed, or even monkfish foie gras! When you visit, you realise just how much everything is done by hand here, from gutting right through to canning. Even the cooking is carried out ‘à l’ancienne’ - in traditional style. And if you fancy taking a foodie souvenir home with you, you might be interested to know that the Breton Fish Company pays homage to its fishermen by labelling every can of white long fin tuna and monkfish foie gras with the name of the boat that brought in the catch, while on the sardine tins you’ll find the name of the boat, the port and the year.
