Musée de la Pêche

Concarneau's fishing museum is inside the walled town and is a must if you are in the area. The program is organised chronologically, with several themes: boats, of course, both in the water and inside with models, slide shows, cards, posters and other visuals; the tools of the trade, navigation instruments, and some very surprising items such as a wooden tuna cosh, for stunning the fish once hauled into the boat, or the 'sardine counters' - a local currency that was in circulation in maritime circles around Concarneau as late as the end of the 19th century. You can get into more detail by focusing on specific techniques for different types of fishing (trawling, tuna, sardines), and going aboard a real trawler, the Hémérica, anchored in the museum.
